Being the T.A. for an anime/manga college course has its ups and downs-- I think I've mentioned that I'm doing that? Yes, I must have somewhere in between my recent ramblings about Sherlock Holmes. *Checks* Okay, maybe not, but I am! And this week included a major up!

My first time manning the class all on my own went a little shakily thanks to a particularly annoying student and thanks to the professor for putting me in charge of a ridiculous, experimental, class-wide group project that even he expects to fail-- "So I thought of putting you in charge of it!" he tells me. Yeah, thanks, dude.

But my second time up was simple as pie since I basically just had to put them into their various groups, keep them on task, and throw out the occasional bone. Took advantage of what will no doubt be the only opportunity I will ever have for showing college students clips of Bleach. What? I had to make sure they understood the difference between a RAW, a dub, and a fansub! Well, I guess I didn't really have to... Oh, hush! Don't judge me!

Anyway, I can now say that I adore those rascally little nerdlets (with some notable exceptions). Never has there been a nerdier class, y'all. I had a blast whilst wandering around the various groups and basically geeking out like whoa with them. When I showed random clips of Bleach, I even got several groans to the tune of, "But that's from the filler arc!" or "That's a spoiler!" D'awwww, nerdlets.

I have about two weeks to prepare an entire class on Ouran High School Host Club. Lord help me.

Ah yes, Bleach

Ha! I love that you're spreading your passions around, as you did with me. I remember your knowing, self satisfied look whenever you noticed I was (good gravy) paying attention to the story arc and (gasP) remembering details! And say what you will about my Brel thing, I've never inflicted him upon my class, (not that I haven't thought about it, but I suppose they're a bit young for his scathing misanthropy).

I am glad to hear that you're getting the hang of it, and that those larvae are responding for the most part. It is a nice feeling to notice the potential nerdiness of a pupil, although the only equivalent from my brief experience has to do with art history books. One of my students stormed out of the class today, visually upset, holding the GREAT PAINTINGS book (which has frequently been the source of pointing and giggling OMG NAKED PEOPLE and MISS MAGGIE THIS IS NOT APPROPRIATE). So I called him back to see what was wrong, and he said:
"So and So said this picture was too gross."
It was a rather bloody martyrdom scene, most likely St. Sebastian, so the objection was probably with blood and heroic nudity.

"Well, I think it's beautiful." I said.
"Thank you." he said, mollified, and returned to class.

Aw, I forgot about forcing you into watching Bleach! Good times!

School children are very much too young for scathing misanthropy. At least wait until they're disaffected junior highers!

I don't know that child, but I love him. He has an artistic future ahead of him. A frustrating artistic future because no one will understand his vision, but he'll develop a following a hundred years after his death. Worth it.

Right now he really likes to draw buses and trucks.

See, already I don't understand his artistic vision! He's off to a great start.

Now, you get paid to talk about anime and manga and manage a bunch of nerdlets?!

That is unfair. ;______; I wish you luck on Host Club . How good is Bleach?

Haha, no, there is no pay. Teaching assistants are slaves.

I love Bleach, but I love it because of the first few arcs. The latest arc has been dragging for a few years now. Nonetheless, I highly recommend it for the first few years worth of stories! My favorite anime heroine, Rukia, is in it.
