I am now only a few hours away from giving my lecture on Ouran High School Host Club to my college manga class-- the pinnacle of my teaching internship, the thing my future recommendations will be based upon.

My head is so full of mental notes, arguments, and anxieties that I fear the first person I encounter today might very well get a verbal punch to the face in the form of:

Person: "Hey, how are you--?"

Me: "METAfictionTROPEaffectationGENDERpoliticsFETISHIZATIONshoujo-- Err, hi?"

Person: ...

I will be very grateful to have today over with. This could go either very well or very, VERY bad. O.O

Haha, I don't know what I was thinking when I decided to write a 20-page paper on Ouran High School Host Club. Probably something along the lines of, "Ouran so pretty. Make good paper. Yes." *FacePalm*

Ah, well. I have a surprising amount to say about shoujo parody and gender/class issues in that manga, so it's all good. I just wish that the damn thing were finished so that I could move on with my life. I'm pretty much going to be writing this thing for a week straight.

Did I ever mention that I was taking a grad course on Graphic Novels? It's kind of the greatest thing in the world, the 20-pager notwithstanding. My professor and I have bonded over manga, though we differ greatly in our appreciation of Frank Miller (possibly because I think Miller is everything that is bad about the comics industry: misogyny, racism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc.). I'll be very sad to be finished with the course, but I'll probably get to work in some capacity with my professor in the future, since he offered as much. The benefits of bonding with your professors! Huzzah!

Okay, I've now watched the first two dubbed episodes at the Funimation website here.

I don't like any of the voice acting choices, and that's unusual. Caitlin Glass as Haruhi in particular irks me, because I think Glass is playing her too rough (bitchy) for a character that's supposed to be (believably) adored by everyone she encounters.

I don't understand why the opening and closing songs were redone in English. :/ I haven't noticed them do that for other Funimation animes before, though I'm sure they must have. Probably for Shin-chan? Still. Odd.

Clarification: When I dissed Vic Mignogna in my last entry, I did so without remembering who he is. *FacePalm* He's the English voice for Ikkaku in Bleach and (more importantly) Edward Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist! I swear I knew that. I think he's excellent in both those parts (particularly as Edward), but I stand by my belief that he sounds all wrong as Tamaki. Then again, if he had used his "Edward" voice, I think that would have been great. Why didn't you do that, Vic?

And for my final bitch about this dub: the worst offense after voice casting was changing Haruhi's closing line of the first episode to: "I'll just call everyone 'dude' and 'bro' now!" *EyeTwitch*

Oh, noooooooooooooees, Funimation, what have you done????

I was concerned that there was no way that there could ever possibly be a good Ouran English dub, not when the Japanese seiyus are so absolutely perfect. No one could ever do Tamaki like Mamoru Miyano does. But I was still hopeful because Funimation has given me some gems in the past. I adore the Fruits Basket, Shin-Chan, and Gunslinger Girl dubs.

But this??? Caution: The fans who shot this apparently had no idea how to work a camera, so it's sideways. You also need to block out all the fans freaking out at how bad it is to actually hear how bad it is. My ears are bleeding from the suck.

Vic Micnogna, you are no Mamoru. I thought John Burgmeier (Shigure on Fruits) could do something interesting with Tamaki, but alas. Haruhi is all wrong, and so are the twins and Honey. *SOB*

Now, I must retreat and desperately dig up some of the Japanese episodes in order to recover from this. ;__;

OMG, I love the Ouran Hight School Host Club manga. Tamaki/Kyouya is the best slash OTP ever. I adore the anime like nobody's business, but there is just so much MORE in the manga. Kyouya is so in love, and they are just so cute. When Kyouya meets Tamaki's mom, it is just the most adorable thing I've ever seen.

And Chapter 23, ripped right from the page: "Mom [he calls Kyouya "Mom" to his "Father"-- it's a long story], the pressure on a third son must be tough. Would you like a shoulder massage?" And then he gives him one. *Fangirl SQUEEEE* Yes, I am unabashedly represented by the fangirls in the manga. I have no problem with this.

On my continued journey through various animes, I've since sampled Naruto, D. Gray-man, Fullmetal Alchemist, Prince of Tennis, and Love Hina. I LOVE all of the above except Love Hina and Prince of Tennis. I found the latter ridiculously boring and the former rather offensive.

I'm fully prepared to admit that it's something of a double-standard to be annoyed by the "harem" scenario when I found the "reverse harem" in Ouran High School Host Club thoroughly enjoyable. The reasons are a mystery, I know. ^_^ Nonetheless, Keitaro, with all of his fantasies and stupidity, offends me.

Resemblances I noticed (Warning: Picture heavy and non-spoilery references to Love Hina, Bleach, D. Gray-man, Naruto, Ouran High School Host Club, Fruits Basket, and Kingdom Hearts):

If I ever wanted to know what Bleach's Gin would look like as a woman, Love Hina's Mitsune pretty much answers the question... )

Shinobu and Hinata vs. Naru and Sakura OR Nice Girls vs. Bitches... )

Kaolla a racist stereotype? Or just another Momiji/Honey? )

D. Gray-man's Komui is Bleach's Ishida with the personality of Tamaki from Ouran! )

Renji is ubiquitous in all my animes... )

Sasuke/Naruto is sooo Riku/Sora )

All of this was more to avoid the fact that my apartment is crawling with termits than actual in-depth analysis. Just keep that in mind. ^_^
