In response to the latest fandom kerfuffle...

Author Diana Gabaldon has come out against fanfic in no uncertain terms. So unambiguous, in fact, that she summed up her position here:

"OK, my position on fan-fic is pretty clear: I think it’s immoral, I _know_ it’s illegal, and it makes me want to barf whenever I’ve inadvertently encountered some of it involving my characters."

She's since followed up her initial post with a somewhat amended comment where she admits that she never considered that fanfic comes from love of the original material. How she could miss that, I don't know, but whatever.

Response cut for the typical lengthy rant... )

Man, Coachella was crazy.

Six hours of traffic in the car to go one mile to get into the campground with my friend throwing up behind me for three of those hours after "overindulging," we'll say. Hours spent in line with hundreds of other dirty campers in the Indio sun each morning to get three minutes of shower. Porter potties, enough said. Third-degree burns all over my body from three days under that punishing sun.

And all freaking worth it, y'all.

I'm on musical overload. Muse, in particular, was on par with a religious experience. I can't believe how good that show was. Thom Yorke sang some Radiohead songs, though not "Creep." Never "Creep," alas, since the band has retired it. Seeing Beth Ditto of Gossip in the flesh was something else, and Band of Skulls rocked my socks.

It's been hard to get back to real life after a weekend like that.

I admit I haven't really kept up with this season of Ugly Betty, but there was a time during the early seasons when I was rabidly in love with this show.

Now, it's over.

And here are my thoughts on the final episode... )

Today was a much needed recuperation day.

Between starting my latest grad classes and being entirely consumed with writing What You Wish For-- I really needed it. It's been yeeeeears since I've pumped out so many chapters in such a short time, as my poor FE readers are well aware. ^^;

In other news, I'm going to be camping out all Burning Man style at the Coachella Music Festival next weekend. I get to see Muse, Tiesto, Gossip, Gorillaz, Thom Yorke, Band of Skulls, Jonsi, Miike Snow, and about a zillion other (mostly Indie) bands. More importantly, I'll get to hang out with David Hasselhoff in the Beer Garden, since he's been known to escape from rehab to get soused there. A weekend of camping, music, friends, and decadence? Weee! I'll come back burnt to a crisp (and likely hungover in various ways), but I expect it will be worth it.

This would have been up hours ago, but I've been engaged in an epic battle with LJ's html codes. Hence the "frustrated" mood icon.

Well, y'all, somebody had to write it. I've waited years since Chapter 266, and no one else (that I know of) has attempted the big, epic AU what-if of Aaroniero actually being Kaien. It started out as an urge to finish a ficlet that has been wasting away on my laptop and has so far surpassed over 16,000 words and had to be divided into parts to fit on lj.

In the wake of some sad news in the world of daytime dramas, I feel the need to pay a little tribute.

A little back-story: I was raised on soap operas. My mother has watched All My Children since before I was born, so I inevitably grew up watching it (and others later). Odd as it might sound, some of my earliest memories are of soap scenes. I've "known" some soap characters my whole life, and they feel like relatives. I rarely post about my soaps because it would be like posting about what your relatives are doing every day-- why?

Anyway, this little PSA is about a particular soap couple-- a gay soap couple.

I've been watching soaps long enough (twenty-three years if you count my whole life) to have seen every attempt American daytime soaps have made at introducing gay characters onto the scene. I can count them all on one hand, and the transition has not always gone smoothly. The first gay kiss on a soap, years after the first gay character had been introduced, was an entirely chaste, closed-mouth peck between Bianca and Lena, the first lesbians on All My Children. After weeks of hype, excitement from some and sheer terror from others, it was hilariously anticlimactic. Later, they would give Bianca another on-screen lover in the form of Reese, and they would have the first gay soap wedding-- and the first gay divorce just days later.

Another soap, One Life to Live, did them one better. The Kyle Lewis and Oliver Fish romance, called "Kish," has been the best-handled gay romance ever attempted on a soap. Oliver was already on the soap as a recurring character for a while before Kyle, a conflicted bad boy, arrived on the scene. We soon discovered that they had been frat brothers in college, where they had a fling as Oliver experimented with his sexuality. Kyle, never conflicted and always in love with Oliver, had an uphill battle with Oliver as he remained in the closet and denied his attraction. Finally, after lots of angst, UST, a love triangle, an illegitimate child, and a thwarted marriage (yes, this is a soap)-- they're together, in love, and happy.

What makes Kish stand out from the rest is that they have been written with the same respect and care as any straight soap couple. The writers and actors haven't shied away from anything. The below clip is of their first onscreen kiss (followed by many others), and it's a far cry from its predecessors.

Hell, they even got a love scene-- the first and only for a gay couple. Sure, there's a lot of cut-away shots to burning candles, but that's par for the course in daytime. The point is that Oliver and Kyle were allowed to be "real" characters in all their human dysfunction. No pretending that gay people are either magical unicorns or sexless eunuchs. They've been damn fun to watch and a heck of a lot more compelling than some of their straight counterparts on the show this past year-- thanks both to some excellent writing and very brave performances by the actors.

Now, for the sad part. After only two years on the canvas, One Life to Live producers have given the boot to Kyle and Oliver, firing the actors and ending their characters' storylines this upcoming month. Some anonymous source has implied that the firing was due to "unprofessional conduct" on the actors' parts during shooting, with the implication that Brett Claywell (Kyle) was uncomfortable playing some of his gay scenes with actually-gay Scott Evans (Oliver). Anyone familiar with Brett Claywell knows this to be bullshit, and he released a statement, saying,

"It's amazing to me that two people can put so much of their heart into a story that can be so passionate and serious and tell a story as honestly and as truthfully as we tried to and just open our hearts to the world and just try to make a difference, try and touch people and stories like this will come out that are absolutely, 100% false ... I'd love for anyone to watch one day of any of the work we've done and tell me that Scott and I were not 100% committed to what we were doing. We were so dedicated to our work. It's hurtful. I'm really offended that someone would make completely false claims. I'm angry. It's slander."

The true reason for their firing is much sadder, which is that they supposedly "didn't catch on with a mainstream audience." Bullshit they didn't. Kish has become a hugely popular soap couple. Just check out YouTube to see how much people don't care about this couple. The truth is that the soap world still isn't entirely comfortable maintaining a long-term gay storyline. Several gay characters have been introduced only to be quietly erased from the show as soon as the shock factor has played itself out.

And it's a damn shame.

There's gonna be a live-action Bleach movie??? An American live-action Bleach movie?

Oh, noes. I can see the cast list already. Ichigo will be played by Shia Lebouf, Rukia by Dakota Fanning, and the rest will be filled in by various actors from Gossip Girl. Oh, and a little piece of my soul will die.

*Sigh* Why, Hollywood? WHY?

I am now only a few hours away from giving my lecture on Ouran High School Host Club to my college manga class-- the pinnacle of my teaching internship, the thing my future recommendations will be based upon.

My head is so full of mental notes, arguments, and anxieties that I fear the first person I encounter today might very well get a verbal punch to the face in the form of:

Person: "Hey, how are you--?"

Me: "METAfictionTROPEaffectationGENDERpoliticsFETISHIZATIONshoujo-- Err, hi?"

Person: ...

I will be very grateful to have today over with. This could go either very well or very, VERY bad. O.O

Once upon a time, young!me opened up a copy of Bret Easton Ellis's book, Rules of Attraction, and was so horrified by the amoral, apathetic characters that she shunned all things Ellis for years to come. Ellis's literary landscape is no place for the hopeful young ingenue who knows what she wants and how she's going to get it, thank you very much.

But for the bitter, disillusioned grad student? Completely different ballgame. I don't know what it says about my current state of being-- haha, of course I do-- but I've fallen into an Ellis-shaped hole. Less than Zero is such a bizarre, awful, perfect book. Young!me didn't have a chance, if only because you really need to have gone through the college party scene (or at least the hangovers) to get this book. Well, I guess that's more true of Rules of Attraction, but I think it applies to Less than Zero as well.

The present-tense, stream-of-consciousness style is fairly addictive. And Ellis, the son of a bitch, wrote Less than Zero when he was nineteen. I also love how he incorporates the same cast of characters throughout all his books in this huge expanded universe. A main character in one book might get referenced or pop up in one line of another. If I'm honest, then the sheer apathy (almost a character unto itself) is kind of addictive, too.

The Less than Zero movie is a particular flavor of '80s awful, but Robert Downey, Jr. and James Spader are fantastic in it. There are other Brat Packers in it, but Downey and Spader blow them all away. Downey as the charming but ultimately doomed and heroine-addicted Julian and Spader as his sadistic pusher/pimp. The biggest flaw of the movie is that they twist the plot around to make an anti-drug morality tale (propaganda) that is completely anathema to the amorality of the book, but there's still a certain charm there.

Bonus tidbit: I discovered that the copy of Rules of Attraction I borrowed from the campus library is a 1st edition that was actually signed by Ellis. I very much want to steal this book. Am contemplating it.

Being the T.A. for an anime/manga college course has its ups and downs-- I think I've mentioned that I'm doing that? Yes, I must have somewhere in between my recent ramblings about Sherlock Holmes. *Checks* Okay, maybe not, but I am! And this week included a major up!

My first time manning the class all on my own went a little shakily thanks to a particularly annoying student and thanks to the professor for putting me in charge of a ridiculous, experimental, class-wide group project that even he expects to fail-- "So I thought of putting you in charge of it!" he tells me. Yeah, thanks, dude.

But my second time up was simple as pie since I basically just had to put them into their various groups, keep them on task, and throw out the occasional bone. Took advantage of what will no doubt be the only opportunity I will ever have for showing college students clips of Bleach. What? I had to make sure they understood the difference between a RAW, a dub, and a fansub! Well, I guess I didn't really have to... Oh, hush! Don't judge me!

Anyway, I can now say that I adore those rascally little nerdlets (with some notable exceptions). Never has there been a nerdier class, y'all. I had a blast whilst wandering around the various groups and basically geeking out like whoa with them. When I showed random clips of Bleach, I even got several groans to the tune of, "But that's from the filler arc!" or "That's a spoiler!" D'awwww, nerdlets.

I have about two weeks to prepare an entire class on Ouran High School Host Club. Lord help me.

I find it equally amusing, annoying, and disturbing that so many of my Google searches offer up my own blog as a link. The main implication, of course, being that the things I want to find are frequently so obscure and esoteric that no one even mentions them but me.

Why for, Internet, in the virtual space where Rule #34 supposedly reigns supreme?

Ah, well.

It is very hard to conduct a love affair with Chopin when there is not a movie about him staring Robert Downey, Jr. Very hard indeed.

Alas, will there ever be a good movie about Chopin? Answer: probably not.

More importantly, how is there NOT already a movie a la Amadeus for Liszt??? This crazy genius man drove women to frenzy, caused them to rip the garters from their dainty legs to throw at him a whole century before women would think to do the equivalent at rock concerts. And the affairs! He led a fascinating life, damn it. Now, where is the movie? All right, I admit that RDJ would be a horrible choice to play Chopin, but he would make a phenomenal Liszt.
