Fic Rec List Meme...

Fanfic rec meme: Pick and rec one random fic from at least five of your favorite fandoms. Then, explain why.
I hope many of you do this meme, because I could use some fic recs. ;) I did more than five fandoms because I sometimes feel guilty for being too lazy to do the occasional rec list, considering the monolith of fandoms and fanfic I've accumulated over the years. But hey, that's what my lj memories are for.
Sidenote: All of these fics are angsty as hell because that's just how I roll.
X-Men Movieverse/Comics:
All of the Animals by Jane St. Clair.
Rating: NC-17.
Summary: Scott makes a compromise.
Pairing: Scott/Logan, Scott/Jean, and Jean/Logan.
Recced because: This is the hottest Scott/Logan fic I've ever read, and the way that Jean is worked in is just soooo yummy. The Scott/Jean is so beautiful and sad that it makes me ache for Scott. Almost a threesome fic, depending on how you define a threesome fic. Also, the author is one of the best there is, so you really can't go wrong with her.
Star Wars:
Cold by Elektra Pendragon.
Rating: NC-17.
Summary: On the verge of becoming a knight and feeling lonely, nineteen-year-old Anakin tries everything to get warm, but instead he discovers new meaning to the word "cold." AU after Phantom Menace. Warning: rape/drug use.
Pairings: Obi-Wan/Anakin and Anakin/Palpatine.
Recced because: A fantastically achieved idea on how Anakin might have eventually chosen the dark side. Angsty to the extreme (just how I like 'em). This may sound strange, but I've never seen rape or drug use so well used in the context of a fic (Oz fics notwithstanding, because, well, duh). You really feel Anakin slipping, and Obi-Wan is just too focused elsewhere to notice his own role in it.
Bleach:
Loyalty by [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com].
Rating: NC-17.
Summary: Gin pays Kira a visit post SS-arc.
Pairing: Gin/Kira.
Recced because: I love it? I've read a great many Gin/Kira fics, and I always come back to this one. Gin is just so perfectly in character, and poor Kira. Also, very hot.
Oz:
My Wife and My Dead Wife by Gemma Files ([Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]).
Rating: NC-17.
Summary: WIFE... is a four letter word.
Pairing: Beecher/Schillinger, Beecher/Keller.
Recced because: A more fascinating downward spiral of sheer triangular lust, hatred, and obsession there is not. This is hands down my favorite Oz fic (or any fic) of all time-- and I have a loooot of fandoms. Gemma Files's Oz fics are the standard by which I judge any other Oz fic. I've re-read this one at least a thousand times (a thousand-and-one as of a few minutes ago), and it's not short by any means. I can never get over how very Oz the language is. It's remarkable. The fic also contains what I feel is the hottest sex scene of any fic I've ever read, and it takes place on top of Sister Pete's desk. Could not recommend this one any higher.
Angel the Series:
Thicker Than Water by Tara R.
Rating: NC-17.
Summary: An encounter down by the waterfront.
Pairings: Spike/Angel(us). Spoilers only for AtS S2 "Darla" and BtVS S5 "Fool for Love"
Recced because: This is one of my favorite Spike/Angel fics. It takes place when the fearsome foursome are still in China during the Boxer Rebellion, and Angel has just gotten his soul. It's that gorgeous period where Angel is still trying to be Angelus, but he's oh so failing. It's hot, angsty (Spike doesn't realize yet why Angelus seems so different), and everything wonderful.
Big Love:
Still in Exile by [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com].
Rating: NC-17.
Summary: Alby's coming of age.
Pairing: Alby/OC. Slash.
Recced because: Um, because it's Alby fic? It's not unusual for me to cling onto the more despicable characters-- if it's not Vern Schillinger, head of the Aryan Brotherhood, then it's crazy freakin' Alby Grant-- but fics like this make me feel justified in my love. Gorgeously written. And hot. The author manages to both make Alby sympathetic as well as keep him perfectly in character as he gradually (and believably) becomes the character we all know in Big Love.
Naruto:
Break in the Routine by [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com].
Rating: PG-15.
Summary: Gai surprises Kakashi with a somewhat unusual challenge. Spoilers for manga chapters 140-150.
Pairing: Kakashi/Gai.
Recced because: This is the fic that converted me to the pairing. Both characters are so hilarious in-character. The challenge is to see who is the better lover, if you couldn't tell from the summary, and then the startling revelation that Gai is actually a virgin in need of Kakashi's expertise. Kakashi so wants none of this nonsense, but he can't turn his back on Gai. The angst comes from Kakashi being somewhat desperate to stick to his sex-and-loveless routine because he's gotten so used to losing the people he cares about. And Gai is just Gai, blissfully oblivious. Hilarious, angsty, fluffy, AND hot. What more could you ask for?
Harry Potter:
Your Every Wish by Maya.
Rating: R.
Summary: Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Pairing: Harry/Draco.
Recced because: Oh, God, I don't even know where to begin with this one. It's Maya, so you already know it's going to be one of the greatest fics out there. The core idea of this fic is so genius; however, it's also so angsty that I can't re-read it for fear of having my heart shatter AGAIN. If I was giving out angst awards, this one would get the gold. But still: the sheer genius lies in the questions this fic presents about power, free will, and what exactly a young boy deserves for saving the world.
Hey, Arnold:
Stalling by Mena Rasin.
Rating: PG-13.
Summary: "Don’t you ever feel…" he began, "like we missed each other by a few inches?"
Pairing: Helga/Arnold.
Recced because: This is a beautiful look at Arnold and Helga during that final summer after high school, but before college. Some truths are finally discussed, and it's just lovely and achey all around.
Queer As Folk:
Just Once by Mikou.
Rating: NC-17.
Summary: Gemini's challenge: Put Mikey in Justin's shoes. Let's say Michael and Brian have had a sexual relationship going on for years, and like with Justin, the relationship is an open one. Michael starts to long for a monogamous relationship, and in walks Ben. Season 2 spoilers.
Pairings: Brian/Michael, Ben/Michael, Brian/Michael/Ben.
Recced because: I adore this fic because, as much as I love Brian/Michael, I think it does a masterful job of showing exactly why these two wouldn't have worked as they were depicted in the early years of the show. Brian just wasn't monogamous, and Michael very much was (is). But the love is very present, and everyone feels very in-character. All the pairings are done justice in a believable (and angsty/hot) way as they work their way to where the show eventually took them.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg of all my fandoms.
