I'm feeling sickly today, so I'm going to bitch about SPN. In essence, I don't think I want to explore Supernatural fandom after all. I'll stick to the fic.

I've barely dipped my feet in by scrolling through comments to the Ruby fics I've found so far, and WTF fandom? What is with all this Ruby hate? She's the best female character to enter the scene since Ellen (and please don't tell me that there's Ellen-hate, too, because I will flip a bitch). Sam/Ruby is hot. I'm shipping them like crazy right now. Though, granted, Genevieve Cortese can barely act, but I'm still clinging to my Katie!Ruby love. And that scene between Sam and Ruby? HOT, says I. Since I'm never gonna get to see Dean and Sam go at it like that on the show, color me pleased.

I also keep stumbling on the kind of bitchiness that I usually reserve for Heroes. It's not that I'm saying that SPN doesn't deserve the same love and attention that Heroes gets. But maybe it's just that I feel like Heroes deserves tons of bitchy meta from across its fandom after the show set itself up for these huge expectations that they haven't been able to meet, and SPN never pretended to be anything other than it was. This show is too campy and monster-of-the-week for that crap. There was an episode about a racist serial killer truck. Enough said. Everyone needs to calm down and stop harshin' on my squees.

Oh, sweetie, run while you still can. The misogyny of the SPN fandom at large (note: NOT the misogyny of all SPN fans) is legendary and ragemaking.

It's definitely a case of "ewww, why are those girls touching MY boys!" The fans are stupidly--emphasize that word there--overprotective of the boys' relationship with each other, and that often leads to SNARK and RAGE at the females on the show.

On the other hand, I'd disagree with Jai about it being legendary (though it is TOTALLY RAGEMAKING RAR); it's the same fandom misogyny you get everywhere, it just feels amplified because you've only got two main characters, so there's nowhere else to displace it. And there's a weird backlash against it in calling the whole show misogynistic and...whee, it's kinda a mess!

Like any other fandom, you just gotta know where to hang. Go enjoy some [livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur recs or some of the fine crack [livejournal.com profile] missyjack puts out or the gorgeous genfic you get from [livejournal.com profile] dotfic or (I think this is her name) [livejournal.com profile] big_pink. And the SPNNewsletter del has EVERY SINGLE STORY it's ever put up tagged on a del.icio.us account. There is sooo much good material out there! (And that's not even going into the slash. Om nom nom.)

Wow. This is the first time I think I've encountered a fandom where the slash/incest fans are actually running the asylum as opposed to just partying in the wings.

That's a good point about the misogyny being amplified because it has nowhere else to go. I hadn't thought of that.

Ooooh, thanks for all the recs! :D

[livejournal.com profile] tenebris probably has it right, in that it is a possessive thing from certain fans.

For sheer WTF, you should check out the General Hospital fandom. Ye Gods! What an insane bunch. Especially the Sonny and Carly fans.

For the record, I like Ruby, but, I liked her best as Shaun Cassidy's daughter. The actress brought more of an edge to her. And I miss Ellen. Dean needs his ass kicked by her more.

Lol. I watch GH, but I don't spend much time on the boards. Right now, I'm digging Sonny/Claudia so I suppose I'll stay away for the time being. ^^;

Ellen kicked everyone's ass, and for that, she is sorely missed. I agree that Katie Cassidy's Ruby was a million times better. I miss her, too!
