Totally intriguing discussion at [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]:

THERE ARE NO COUPLES IN BLEACH, AND ANYONE WHO WAS A COUPLE, THEIR LADY IS NOW DEAD. WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU, KUBO?

No joke. Love = Death in Bleach. Urahara and Yoruichi don't count, because they're living in sin. ;)

Women, in general, don't seem to do so well in Bleach. They keep getting killed, kidnapped, or impaled through the gut multiple times, Rukia.

KT doesn't believe in happy endings. D=

Or maybe it's because Bleach characters are so awesome on their own that having any of them as a couple violates some law of the universe. So they will eventually DIE. Urahara and Yoruichi are already in violation of these laws so whether they're together or apart doesn't really make a difference.

Well, the women in Bleach do a lot better than most. At least when they get kidnapped or impaled or attempted murder, they bounce back and KICK THE ASS of whoever did it instead of running weeping to the hero.

*Shudders* I just got this horrible vision of Rukia dying in the end as some horrible time-to-grow-up-Ichigo, dead!mentor thing. Kubo isn't also a fan of the Anglo-Saxon hero pattern, is he? :(

Totally true, Masaki, Miyako and Hisana D: But it's also true they recover amazingly well (errr, except when they're already dead) and are as hard and strong as the guys, that's refreshing.

You know, I thought [livejournal.com profile] capslock_bleach was all about crack, but no! They have really interesting discussions, like that one I read about babies and shinigani!pregnancy in SS, I'm still wondering about that. Oh, and also about how the shinigamis age, good stuff.

Ooooh. I need to find that discussion, because I swear that I've pondered nothing harder than the shinigami babies and marriage. Because it's never explained. The only shinigami marriages I'm aware of included no babies. There's Isshin, but he must have used a gigai for all of that business that led to Kurosaki babies. Also, the concept of pregnancies/birth in Soul Society throws a whole new wrench into my understanding of the Bleach reincarnation cycle.

Exactly, does that mean they are born dead? Oo Or maybe they can't have babies at all?

Thanks! :D

Born!dead babies make my head hurt. Oh, the implications...

I don't know. I read a fic in which Rukia and dead!Ichigo couldn't have babies, because Rukia's spirit energy wasn't high enough to create a new life. As devastated as that would make me, that theory seems most likely in Bleach land. I mean, why do the nobles have progeny, but the poor saps in Rukongai have to form substitute families?

That is the most logical explanation, IMO. Reiatsu is the most important thing when it comes to souls and shinigamis, although I believe Rukia would have more than enough if she wanted babies.

The issue of the substitute families in Rukongai still makes me sad. When Ichigo sent the parakeet!boy to Soul Society he said he would be able to see his mom again, and that was such an emotional episode, I loved it. Then we come to the SS episodes and, surprise of surprises!, is almost impossible for someone to find their family in there, and what's worse Rukongai is an awful place to live (die, whatever). So, what the heck? why would anyone want to go there?

As I understand SS is not Heaven, right? If that's true and SS is like purgatory or something, then...how or why are the souls sent there? Oh Bleach, why must you break my brain so?

Oh, I know! When Chad found that boy in Rukongai, I could have cried. After Rukia gave all of those beautiful speeches to the souls before they passed over, I was all wtf? She lied. She lied hardcore, considering where she came from herself. I was surprised that Ichigo didn't freak out more over that, considering his mother and all.

Why would anyone want to go there? Given the choice, I think I'd prefer to stay a ghost in the human world. At least I'd be able to check in with my family. Then again, getting picked up by a hollow would suck. Of course, there are also hollows in SS... *Sigh*

Conclusion: it sucks when you die (at least in the Bleachverse).

I was all wtf? She lied. She lied hardcore, considering where she came from herself

Yup, but I guess Rukia thinks that SS is the place where souls belong, so she had to do anything to ensure they went there and didn't stay on Earth (and possibly became hollows later on). I also thought Ichigo would want to look for her mother there, but nope, the thought didn't even crossed his mind.

I'm still at loss at the SS/Heaven issue, but maybe KT is going to explain that later? I remember Aizen said something about standing in Heaven, right before he and his minions left SS.

I've always wondered when Ichigo was going to go, "Hey, I have access to SS. Maybe I should go and check in on my mother." I was really surprised when it didn't come up during SS.

Yeah, Aizen said something about bringing Heaven down and merging it with SS, didn't he? I discarded the statement for crazy-megalomaniac-Aizen talk.
