Star Trek Movie...

Star Trek was amazing.
I took my father and had a hilarious time of it when he revealed his sordid past as a Trekkie. I knew he watched and enjoyed the show back in the day, but it soon became clear that my father was one fan convention away from owning a pair of Vulcan ears. He liked the movie except for the breaches in continuity with the original series. When I prodded him, it all came spilling out. Suddenly, it was, "In episode so and so Kirk said this and Spock did that and therefore the movie was wrong." I was having such a great time making fun of him, giggling, "What else was wrong, Dad?"
For once, I got to be the uncaring noob, and somebody else was the overly invested nerd. Awesome.
In terms of shipping, I went in expecting to come out a convert of Kirk/Spock, the Original Slash Pairing, the fathers of slash fiction, etc. etc. But I ended up falling in absolute LOVE with a het OTP. Go figure?
I was just getting into Kirk/Spock when BAM! Spock/Uhura!!! Their pairing took me from really liking the movie to needing to own it immediately. I need fic for them, like, yesterday. My Trekkie father informed me that Original-flavored Uhura had an unrequited thing for Kirk, and I am sooo glad that was changed (and not just because I detest William Shatner).
In terms of racial depictions in the media, I love the idea of the White dude-- the lead character no less-- being spurned while the minorities happily conduct their loving relationship in spite of him. When does that EVER happen in popular media? Never. They're also precious together, not to mention geniuses. It's geek love! And somewhat inappropriate love, since I'm pretty sure it was mentioned that he was her teacher. Naughty, Spock!
All in all, there's meat there and I hope there's a lot of fic exploring the pairing. Even more so, I hope that the pairing doesn't get lost to what will inevitably be a fandom focus on Kirk/Spock.
As for the casting, I don't have so much a complaint as a general expression of WTF??? This movie had the most RANDOM casting ever. Tyler Perry, Winona Ryder, the chick from House, Meghan from Felicity, and John Chow? Oh, and Kirk's stepfather on the phone was GREG GRUNBERG! Hello, Matt Parkman!
There were a lot of equally random tributes to Star Wars as well. O.o Nero's throne room, Nero's theme music, Nero's death... Maybe just Nero in general.
Also? I heart Leonard Nimoy. A lot.
