Heroes Meta Returns...

Okay, so I apparently have enough thoughts on the first four episodes of Heroes this season to write meta. Better late than never.
I wish this season had been last season. It's moving slow as molasses and I don't really care all that much about what's happening so far, but at least there hasn't been any fail!science or further continuity rape yet. Of course, Mohinder hasn't come back yet, so I'm not gonna hold my breath on this continuing. Sorry, Mohinder, I love you, but you bring the fail!science like bees to honey. And I stopped listening to those opening monologues back in S1.
Hiro/Ando: I love how insensitive Ando was about Hiro's imminent death. Sorry, Hiro, but you're practically dead anyway so you can't interfere with my wedding plans. And I love how I got to watch, like, three versions of it. Nice.
Hiro/Tadashi: Seriously, Hiro, let the dude jump. Anyone that easily driven to suicide is going to do it sooner or later.
Tracey/Governor Guy: That scene where Tracey walked into the room and every male in the building paused to drool while she laid out the why, yes, I'm hot shit smile reminded me why I desperately want Ali Larter off this show. Because that scene sums up everything that's gone wrong with the writing for her all along. And I'm expected to believe that Governor Guy never heard about his lobbyist/adviser/whatever the hell she was becoming public enemy #1? Just, I haven't had sex with you in a while, so welcome back to your job? Seriously?
Bennett Divorce: NOOOOOESSS. I know HRG deserves this like whoa, but I miss Sandra and Lyle so hard. Couldn't she just deny him sex to punish him?
HRG/Peter: "That's a very nice arm." Oh, ho? New ship? Seriously, people need to start listening to Peter's crazy delusions. They usually turn out to be true.
Random Peter/Claire: *Has most anti-climatic season reunion ever*
Sylathan/Peter: I would be full of squee that Nathan flew all the way to NY just to talk to Peter and at Peter's adorable excitement at Nathan's new powers-- but I can't be. Because that's not Nathan, and, no, I'm still not over that. And didn't Peter actually see Sylar using that memory power before? I could have sworn he did. You'd think he'd remember that...
Claire/Gretchen: I have a ton of issues with this evolving Claire/Gretchen business-- as in the way that networks always seem to see fit to deal with failing ratings by "trotting out the lesbians" when they would never consider actually giving me the male equivalent. Despite the fact that Peter is ripe to be shipped with literally ANYONE in the cast, and Claire's gay-until-graduation comes out of nowhere and fails to feel organic to her character. Not to mention that if Gretchen actually killed Annie to get closer to Claire (as it looks right now) then this is going to be one more case of the offensive "psycho lesbian" syndrome. Kring should know better. You know, those kind of issues.
But I must say that becoming a lesbian has so far done wonders for Claire's disposition. She was darn right pleasant to watch this episode. Though, she appears to have developed a case of severe selective memory. HRG spent the majority of his life trying to "help" people? HAHA, seriously?
Samuel: Okay, Samuel is hot. I'll give him that. And I would find his ink power intriguing if it weren't already confused with magical compasses and whatever he used to destroy that house full of people. Samuel/Bennett backstory, however, is definitely intriguing.
Ted Kennedy-- err, I mean Nathan: I have no issue whatsoever with the idea that Nathan accidentally killed his girlfriend-- I'd be shocked if he never did-- but I do question the fact that the only memories he picked up from the pool were of himself and Kelly. Millie is a sassy lady, and I don't believe for a second that the pool doesn't have a whole mess of memories of her and the various pool boys from over the years. Yes, that was my first thought during those flashbacks. And, yes, ewwwww.
Millie: *Is back!* Yay! I also have no issue with her attempting to off her best friend's son. Because this is the kind of friendship I always pictured Angela having. You know, the kind where they cover up the murders of their respective children and still go out afterward for drinks in the city. I was confused by the idea of her having normal friendships.

Date: 2009-10-11 07:24 am (UTC)The Nathan/Sylar thing actually IS interesting (so far...). The Matt thing is idiotic, but overall the writing is decent. I can buy that Peter's first thought wouldn't be 'oh my, he has SYLAR'S POWERS! he must be SYLAR!' just because there are so many other crazy things it could be first, and that'd honestly be the last thing he'd WANT it to be most likely.
I also sort of like that the plots moving slowly. That's always what appealed to me about the show originally. The idea of them living ordinary lives. With the action set pieces always being more intriguing/interesting rather than spellbinding or pulse-pounding.
Anyway, I agree with quite a few of the things you've said. I just think the characters are, on the whole, WAY more likable now. Claire's not being a spoiled brat, Peter's not being a didactic unbelievable moron (rather than your run of the mill moron), Angela's not sitting around moping and being captured every seconds. It's all good stuff, in my opinion.
...next week's preview however, looks freaking mediocre as hell. Back to the inconsistent all over the place writing rather than the well-paced, but fairly slow character-driven stuff we've been getting the last four weeks. Wonder if last monday's was Bryan Fuller's last... only way a line like "Yeah, no, yeah" could get into a script I think.
Most of the weird plot stuff I can accept to keep it actually moving. Only thing I'm actually pissed off about, is Noah and Sandra getting divorced actually. Which sucks because it's one of the well-written things this season. I'm just tired of the divorce and romance drama. This is a show where there are some slightly older people. (Like 30's and 40's) It's perfectly all right to have people in their 30's and 40's be happily married... =|
Bah, YouTube has messed me up, I keep thinking I have way less space to write comments than I do. Haha...

Date: 2009-10-11 05:22 pm (UTC)See, but there needs to be balance between pace and story. S2's pacing was way too slow (with boring story) and S3's pacing was way too fast (with ridiculous story). But I think S1 had perfect pacing v. story. S1 was slower than S3, but I was never allowed to become bored (well, except for sometimes during Hiro's arc). I could enjoy Claire's "real-life" high school issues because the next scene would have Mohinder facing off against Sylar. Personally, I've found S4 so far boring and slow. But there's still time to pick up.
Lol, I'm the opposite on the Bennett divorce issue in that I feel if they're going to deal with something that emotional, I want to see more of it. Their divorce is a big deal to their respective characters and the show has been building towards their break since S1, but we haven't seen any Sandra/HRG interaction. I waaannntttsss it.
Oh, Bryan Fuller. How thou has forsaken us. Who said, "Yeah, no, yeah" again?

Date: 2009-10-11 09:57 pm (UTC)And I agree that this season is lacking in intrigue. Sorry, I was responding to some other stuff I read I think. Where people want ACTION. This show has NEVER been about action, it's been about TENSION. And we haven't had a whole lot of that.
Well, at least Sandra isn't just gone from the show (though she's only made one appearance), involved in her daughter's life. Rather than what we've got over volumes 2 and 3 where it was like "Janis what?" and "Heidi who?".
Oh, man, I miss the tension. The episodes leading up to "Homecoming" were amazing, and the meetings between teh heroes were still exciting.
It's still "Heidi who?" as far as the writers are concerned. They even had an opportunity to mention her when Angela and Nathan were at dinner and he was talking about fixing his relationships. But nooooo...

Date: 2009-10-12 02:38 pm (UTC)Going out on a limb here but I think Samuel's power is actually something closer to controlling the molecules things are made out of. That's the only thing I could come up with after I saw him:
a) move dirt over his brother's (?) grave
b) control tat ink in Emma's back
(speaking of Emma, put a shirt on will you?!)
c) transfer the compass tat to Peter
(I'm with you on the compass thing... way to confuse everyone, guys!)
d) almost choke Edgar with a tat shaped like a hand
e) destroy an entire fricking mansion by creating a sinkhole (??! What the deuce!)
I don't know. Maybe I'm stretching for things... He also gets places inordinately fast. Like one minute he's tatting Emma's back, looking for faces, the next he's in NY, chatting up Peter. That might just be crappy editing/writing though.
I'm not abandoning this show though. Been through too much! :D
